Sources: Sergio Reguilon set to return to Tottenham
Sergio Reguilon is set to return to Tottenham in the summer with the club facing even more difficulty in securing a top-tier fee, sources have told Football Insider.
The Spanish left-back, 26, has spent the season on loan at Atletico Madrid after being deemed surplus to requirements by Antonio Conte.
But Reguilon has endured a wretched campaign in which injury and poor form has reduced him to just five appearances and 98 minutes of first-team action.
He is now set to return to parent club Spurs at the end of the season with his future still up in the air.
The defender agreed the terms of a season-long loan with the Spanish big hitters at the end of August but no buy option was included in the agreement.
It is believed that Atletico have no intention of looking to convert Reguilon’s loan into a permanent deal.
There were high hopes at the Spanish club, as well as at Spurs, that the former Real Madrid star could reignite his career back in his homeland and consequently increase his market value.
But he arrived with an injury and has struggled to be anything other than an anonymous figure this season.
Further criticism came his way when he was sent off after just 22 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Almeria last month.
Reguilon has been on the bench for each of the three league matches since being available again and was also an unused substitute in two Copa Del Rey fixtures with Reinildo Mandava now firmly ahead of him in the pecking order at the Metropolitano Stadium.
At Tottenham, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon are the first choice left-sided defenders in Antonio Conte’s 3-5-2 system.
