Sources: Sheffield United close in on signing of Atletico Madrid star Ivo Grbic

Sheffield United are in advanced talks to sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Ivo Grbic, sources have told Football Insider.

Blades boss Chris Wilder is keen to bring in a new keeper during this month’s transfer window to boost their survival bid and has lined up a move for Croatia international Grbic.

Grbic is in the final six months of his contract with Atleti and the Spanish giants are now willing to cash in on him rather than allow him to run down his contract and leave for free in the summer window.

The 28-year-old is yet to appear in the 2023-24 campaign so far and has exclusively been used as a backup to world-class shot-stopper Jan Oblak this term.

Grbic joined Diego Simeone’s side in 2020 and has made 14 total appearances during his time at the Wanda Metropolitano, conceding 14 goals and keeping four clean sheets.

He had a loan spell at Ligue 1 side Lille in the 2021-22 campaign and made 29 appearances for the club, keeping five shut-outs.

The two-cap Croatia star has also had spells at Lokomotiva Zagreb and Hadjuk Split.

Grbic could come into the Sheffield United side to replace Wes Foderingham, who has played every minute in the Premier League so far this term.

The ex-Rangers ace has conceded 49 goals in 20 top-flight games and has kept just one clean sheet.

Wilder’s side are rock bottom of the table ahead of their next clash against West Ham on Sunday (21 January).

The Blades are eight points from safety with 18 games left to play this term.
