Sources: Sheffield Wednesday open talks with ex-Aston Villa manager Smith

Sheffield Wednesday have opened talks with former Aston Villa and Leicester City boss Dean Smith over the vacant manager’s job, sources have told Football Insider.

Championship new boys Wednesday are searching for a new manager following the shock departure of Darren Moore earlier this month – days after he guided them to promotion from League One.

Smith, 52, is out of work after leaving Leicester City at the end of the season following their relegation from the Premier League.

He was appointed early in April on a short-term contract running until the end of the season.

Smith landed the job at Leicester despite being sacked by Championship side Norwich City earlier last season with the Canaries sitting fifth in the table.

The Englishman has had stints in charge of Brentford, Aston Villa and Norwich in the Championship.

He led Villa to promotion to the Premier League in 2019 before guiding them to top-flight survival and the Carabao Cup final the following season.

Smith was eventually sacked by the Villains during the 2020-21 campaign after a poor run of results.

But with the Sheffield Wednesday post now available after Moore’s departure it opens the opportunity for Smith to get back into management.

The Owls will play Championship football once again next term after their famous play-off run which saw them beat Peterborough in the semi-final and rivals Barnsley in the showpiece Wembley final.
