Sources: Southampton star Alex McCarthy set to move if they get relegated
Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is set to leave the club if they are relegated this season, sources have told Football Insider.
The shot-stopper is wanted by a number of Championship clubs ahead of the summer when he will have two years remaining on his contract at St Mary’s.
The 33-year-old has not made a single Premier League appearances for the Saints this season and has only replaced first choice Gavin Bazunu three times this season.
Last season McCarthy made 17 league appearances for the club, conceding 27 goals and keeping five clean sheets.
Despite last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Tottenham, Southampton are currently bottom of the Premier League table.
The club have amassed just 23 points from 28 games and are massively at risk of being relegated at the end of the season.
The Saints are two points off safety but have played more games than four of the teams above them in the league.
If Southampton are relegated at the end of the season McCarthy, who was named the club’s player of the season in the 2017-18 campaign, is unlikely to stay at the club.
Man United had been keeping tabs on the shot stopper last summer after sending Dean Henderson out on loan but ultimately made no approach.

Current first choice Bazunu, 21, joined the club last summer and his deal runs until 2027.
The Ireland international has made 28 Premier League appearances this season and has conceded 46 goals and kept just four clean sheets in those outings.
