Sources: Strasbourg agree to sign Aston Villa defender Guilbert

Strasbourg have agreed to sign Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert, Football Insider has learned.

Villa manager Dean Smith has given the green light for the 26-year-old to leave on deadline day.

A Villa source has told Football Insider that Guilbert is set to return to his France homeland after agreeing the terms of a loan move.

Guilbert has just two years left on his Aston Villa contract.

The right-back spent the second half of last season on loan with Strasbourg.

He scored once and provided four assists in 13 Ligue 1 games in his first spell at the club.

The January 2019 signing seemed well placed to force his way back into Smith’s plans at Villa Park this summer.

However, the arrival of Ashley Young and Axel Tuanzebe pushed the defender further down the pecking order.

Guilbert scored in his only appearance of the season against Barrow in the Carabao Cup last week.

He made his first matchday squad of the Premier League season against Brentford at the weekend.

Matty Cash is Villa’s first-choice right-back and has started all three Premier League games this season.

Guilbert moved to the club from Caen in 2019 and started the 2019/20 campaign as Smith’s preferred right-back.

He missed just five games before the season was suspended because of the pandemic.

However, since it restarted in June 2020 he has started just two Premier League games for the Midlands giants.

In other news, a club has agreed to sign a regular Aston Villa goalscorer.
