Sources: Todd Boehly is ‘huge admirer’ of Frenkie de Jong as Chelsea make him priority signing

Chelsea have made Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong a priority signing this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Blues showed interest in the Dutch midfielder over the summer but were unable to complete a move after the 25-year-old turned down offers to move away from Spain.

It is understood that Chelsea remain interested in signing De Jong this summer, with owner Todd Boehly a huge admirer of the midfielder.

Man United also remain in the race to sign De Jong this summer, with Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag eager to reunite with his former Ajax star at Old Trafford.

While De Jong wanted to stay put at Camp Nou last summer, he may be forced towards the exit doors this summer with the La Liga giants struggling financially.

Barca manager Xavi remains a fan of De Jong but understands the club needs to raise money via sales this summer.

Man City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has been identified as an ideal replacement for De Jong, and Football Insider sources revealed last month (24 February) that Barcelona are “pushing hard” to sign the German international.

Chelsea have flexed their financial muscle under Boehly, spending over £600million in the summer and January windows, but the American is still wanting more reinforcements at Stamford Bridge and has pushed De Jong to the top of his priority list.

The Netherlands international has made 32 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring twice and assisting once.
