Sources: Tottenham leapfrog Newcastle and now in pole position to sign James Maddison
Tottenham lead the race to sign Leicester City playmaker James Maddison this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Spurs are long-term admirers of the 26-year-old and are keen to bring him to North London to solve their lack of creativity in the squad.
Liverpool and Newcastle United have also shown interest in Maddison, and could enter a bidding war with Tottenham for his signature at the end of the season.
Tottenham identified a new creative midfielder as the club’s top priority under Antonio Conte, and are wanting to address the position in the summer ready for a new managerial appointment.
Spurs view Maddison as a potential Premier League superstar and are prepared to fend off interest from other clubs to secure him as a marquee signing.
Maddison has managed to score nine goals and assist six for Leicester in a season where the club have slumped into a relegation battle.
The Foxes currently sit in the relegation zone in 19th place having won just seven of their 29 league matches.
Maddison sits second in Leicester’s scoring charts this season behind only Harvey Barnes. The England international also missed a run of four games in December and January – Leicester lost all four when Maddison was absent.

Maddison joined Leicester in 2018 from Norwich City and has helped the club win the 2020 FA Cup and 2021 Community Shield during his time at the King Power Stadium.
Throughout his five years at the club, Maddison has made 195 senior appearances, scoring 54 and assisting 38 times.
