Sources: Wolves could be ‘forced’ to accept Joao Gomes offer as Man United lurk

Man United are among a number of plotting moves to sign Joao Gomes amid a growing expectation that Wolves could be forced to sell their star man.

Man United are interested in Gomes as Ruben Amorim plans to improve his midfield options, as they continue to assess a number of options for the role.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, United could be boosted in their pursuit of the midfielder as Wolves will be forced to accept offers for him should they suffer relegation from the Premier League.

Wolves are sat rock bottom of the table as things stand, and are without a win in 11 games, while they have been cut eight points adrift of safety.

Despite their decision to sack Vitor Pereira and hire Rob Edwards, a number of clubs have been placed on alert in case they are forced into major sales next summer.

Wolves could be forced to accept Joao Gomes offer

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 30 October that Wolves are concerned about losing star players if they are relegated.

Now, there is a growing feeling that they will be forced to accept offers, with the likes of Gomes keen to remain playing at the highest level if the club go down.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast, I explained: “Yeah, look, there’s a long list of midfielders that Manchester United are looking at right now.

“Joao Gomes is the latest name to be added to that list. Again, Premier League proven as well, which is a key thing for Manchester United in their transfer policy right now.

“The key to this one could be if Wolves suffer relegation. They will be forced into sales if they are forced to drop into the championship.

“Joao Gomes will want to continue playing at the highest level as well.

“If Wolves do suffer relegation from the Premier League, it could make a deal easier to do due to price tag and obviously the player looking to play at the highest level possible with Wolves probably being forced to cash in on their best players if they do go down.”

Gomes sent a message to Wolves fans following the discontent after losing to Burnley at Molineux, and has maintained a strong relationship, but could be tempted to leave.

Man United and Liverpool plot moves for Gomes

Football Insider exclusively revealed in January that Liverpool and Man United were keeping tabs on Gomes, before he signed a new deal at Wolves.

Gomes signed a new contract at Wolves in April to extend his stay until 2030 and deter growing interest after his impressive displays last season.

However, as a result of the ongoing turmoil at Molineux, a number of “top clubs” in the Premier League and abroad have sent scouts to keep tabs on his performances.

Football Insider revealed last month that Man United are desperate to sign a new midfielder when the window opens, with a number of options on their radar.

Gomes joined Wolves in January 2023 from Flamengo for £15million, and any exit would likely land them a significant profit on his sale.
