Southampton make Russell Martin sack decision today – sources

Southampton are happy to keep the faith with under-pressure boss Russell Martin and hold fire on sacking him, sources have told Football Insider.

The Saints have picked up just four points from a possible 33 to start the season after a 2-0 away loss at Wolves on Saturday (9 November).

Pressure has been building on Martin in recent weeks but the ex-defender earned a reprieve last week with a home win against Everton.

But the south coast club reverted to type at Molineux, registering no shots on target as Wolves leapfrogged them to go 19th in the table.

Sources say the stance of club chiefs as of Monday morning is they are currently willing to keep Martin on at St Mary’s Stadium but they will be left with no choice but to replace the Scot if their poor form continues.

The 38-year-old was handed a new three-year deal in the off-season after leading the club to play-off final success.

Martin has more time at struggling Southampton

The Saints have scored just seven goals in 11 top-flight games this term, the worst record of any Premier League side.

Southampton now face Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham in their next five league fixtures.

A small crumb of comfort has come in the League Cup, where they have reached the quarter-final – but will play league leaders Liverpool next month with a semi-final spot on the line.

The Saints are already four points from safety after Ipswich won away at Tottenham on Sunday (10 November).
