Souttar will join Rangers this month in blow to Celtic – Glasgow pundit

John Souttar will become a Rangers player this month after already agreeing a pre-contract deal with the club.

That’s according to former Celtic hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Gers’ latest signing.

Rangers announced the pre-contract signing of Souttar, 25, on 14 January.

As reported by the Scottish Sun on Monday night (17 January), Hearts are demanding a £500,000 fee for the Light Blues to sign Souttar this month, with manager Robbie Neilson admitting a deal could be done.

The centre-back has been a mainstay for Hearts this season, with 23 appearances under his belt so far.

Despite this, McAvennie is expecting Souttar to depart Tynecastle before the January window shuts.

“I’ve got a feeling Souttar will join them before the end of the window,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The boy has made up his mind to leave and join Rangers, I just hope the Hearts fans don’t get on his back.

“He’s done so well for them and he deserves to move to a club where he will regularly challenge for trophies.

“He’s a cracking player, he was a Celtic target last summer so I’m sure that will go down well with everyone.

“I watched him play for Scotland and I think he did well. He will immediately come in as well.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s this month or at the end of the season, as soon as he arrives, he’s in.

“Personally I hope he’s absolutely hopeless for them.

Obviously, I’m joking but from a Celtic point of view it’s not ideal for Rangers’ defence to get stronger.”
