SPFL told to ‘shut it down’ by Glasgow pundit after Celtic statement

Frank McAvennie wants the SPFL to shut down the Scottish Premiership season after tonight’s game between Celtic and St Mirren.

The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the plan to let only 500 fans attend games is “nonsense”.

In a statement on Tuesday (21 December) Celtic confirmed they had asked the SPFL to move the scheduled winter break forward by a week.

This comes following a raft of postponements up and down the UK due to a surge in coronavirus cases.

Glasgow-based McAvennie has backed the plans as he wants to see a capacity Parkhead when Celtic next face Rangers.

“They have stopped letting fans in,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“It’s down to 500. That’s a load of nonsense. I don’t know who is making these decisions.

“I do think they should shut the league down early. It’s only a week early.

“Shut it down. The fans have paid big money to watch the Old Firm game.

“There is a title race on this season and the fans need to see it. Rangers have also had a full Ibrox backing them in the first Old Firm this season.

“We might have to play ours behind closed doors. How is that fair?

“Celtic need to get the league closed down, that’s just for the safety of the fans and the players.

“We need to get over this virus and I think that will help. I think we should knock it on the head after tonight’s game.”

Celtic are currently scheduled to face Rangers at Parkhead on 2 January.

As it stands, only 500 fans would be allowed to attend the game, which could have major ramifications for the title race.

In other news, Celtic warned by English pundit about “overboard celebrations” amid “runaway” Rangers claim.
