Stefan Borson drops ‘huge’ Marcus Rashford reveal after Man United controversy

Manchester United have been making efforts to trim their wage bill as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to cut costs at Old Trafford.

The Premier League side managed to temporarily offload two high earners in the January transfer window after Marcus Rashford and Antony headed out on loan to Aston Villa and Real Betis.

However, Man United were unable to shift the likes of Casemiro during the recent window after he’s struggled for minutes under Ruben Amorim.

BBC Sport reported on 12 February Ratcliffe is considering making between 100 and 200 more redundancies after 250 members of staff were let go last year.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Rashford alone earns more than the 100 people who are potentially facing the sack at Old Trafford.

The England international is on around £325,000 a week, with Villa believed to be covering 70 per cent of his salary until the end of the season.

The West Midlands giants hold a £40million option-to-buy clause on the 27-year-old, who is under contract at Old Trafford until 2028.

Man United must sell three stars to control wage bill

Borson revealed the “huge” wages of the top-10 United earners likely dwarf the salaries of 90 per cent of people at the club.

He told Football Insider: “The key with United’s cost base is removing players that are not performing on the field, but they are on huge wages.

“That started with Sancho. It’s the same with Antony, Rashford and Casemiro.

“There will then be another group of players leaving as they are out of contract.

“At that stage, United will have their wage bill under control.

“But we’ve got a situation at the moment where Rashford is paid considerably more per annum than the 100 people they’re looking to get rid of, so football is not a normal industry.

“There is a group of people, the top-10 earners in these organisations that just dwarf 90 per cent of the people in the organisation.”

Man United have made significant wage cuts after high-profile exits

United’s financial situation has been in the spotlight recently after they sent a letter to fan groups last month warning them the club are at risk of breaking the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Under the PSR rules, top-flight sides are only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.

Man United

The Manchester giants generated a club-record revenue of £661.8million for 2023-24 despite recording a net loss of £113.2million, while their wage bill stood at £365million.

Football Insider revealed on 17 October United cut their wage bill by around £34million after several high-profile figures moved on last summer.
