Stefan Borson drops Liverpool verdict after David Ornstein takeover update
Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is looking to add to its empire after exploring a new takeover deal.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealed on 29 March FSG is weighing up a potential takeover of Spanish club Malaga after a delegation visited their facilities in February.
However, it is believed Qatar Sports Investment, which owns French champions PSG, is also on the trail and ready to launch a rival move.
Malaga currently sit 16th in the Segunda Division after securing promotion from the third-tier last season.
Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the upside of any potential deal would largely only benefit FSG and Malaga rather than Liverpool.
Qatari businessman Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani currently owns 51 per cent of Malaga, while a Spanish hotel group own the remainder.
Liverpool’s owners have been looking to secure a takeover after a deal fell through to buy French side Bordeaux last summer.

Liverpool could agree Malaga loan deals
Borson revealed Liverpool could loan players to Malaga if FSG agrees a takeover deal.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t think it’s massively beneficial for Liverpool.
“There could be some player exchange by loaning them out, but I think it’s more beneficial for the owners as opposed to Liverpool.
“I think there is limited upside for parent clubs in these multi-club models.
“It seems to me most of the benefits come from the teams further down the chain and for the owners.
“Further down the chain you get the benefit of the main club’s expertise, data and understanding of the game.
“Liverpool are clearly one of the leaders in the world in the sport of football and Malaga clearly are not, so the exchange of ideas and of football IP is going to be largely one way.
“It’s really a question of whether Liverpool get any benefit from being able to move players out to Malaga, whether that helps in any real way.
“I’m not really sure it’s that much better than it would be if they were to go on loan to another third party.
“I guess there’s some benefit in being able to move some of your cost into the group. That’s a small benefit. You can share some of the central overhead cost.”
