Stefan Borson drops verdict on Newcastle selling star to fund Marc Guehi deal

Newcastle United are unlikely to sell one of their star players to fund the potential big-money signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it “wouldn’t make sense” for the north-east giants to sign Guehi and then immediately sell one of their stars as they look to continue making steps forward.

Football Insider revealed on 6 August Newcastle are now in advanced talks to sign defender Guehi following his strong showing at the recent European Championships.

The Tyneside club have agreed personal terms with the England international, who will cost upwards of £60million.

Newcastle escaped selling Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon or Bruno Guimaraes in time to be included in the club’s accounts for the 2023-24 campaign despite heavy speculation around their future.

Newcastle could avoid PSR issues with strong season

Borson believes Eddie Howe’s side could sign Guehi and avoid any potential PSR issues if they manage to record a strong season.

“I suspect they won’t sell a big player, that wouldn’t make sense,” Borson told Football Insider.

“It’s more likely they see how it goes for now. They will probably be close enough next season such that they won’t need a sale if they have a very good season.

“If they maximised broadcast by finishing in the top five, did very well in the domestic trophies or got some new sponsors on board, all of that could give them the necessary revenue to mean that they didn’t need to sell during the year.

“They probably also would be looking at June next year and say ‘Well, if the worst comes to the worst and we have got a big headache, then we’ll just go through that June process again and try and find some players to swap with whoever else has got some PSR issues’ being cynical.

“I just think it would be counterproductive to sign Guehi and then immediately sell one of your other big players. That would seem to make no sense at all.

“If you were that worried about PSR, then you would just take a year out of the transfer market in terms of those big signings.”
