Stefan Borson has news today on £160m Chelsea deal
Chelsea’s women’s team sale is unlikely to have been approved by the Premier League yet due to the complexity of the transaction.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the governing body will need to obtain several valuation reports before it can green light the deal.
Chelsea transferred ownership of their women’s team to a BlueCo company in June to help offset their losses for 2023-24.
The London giants previously sold club hotels and part of their Cobham training ground in intra-company deals to avoid breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
Chelsea women’s team sale yet to receive approval
But Borson insisted the women’s team sale, which Chelsea are said to value at around £160m, is likely to take more than 100 working days before receiving the necessary approval.
“It will be going through a process,” Borson told Football Insider.
“We know that it was completed at the end of June.
“We know that it’s very unlikely that something would have already been approved by now given the timescales that we have seen in the Premier League decision in the judgement for associated party transactions.
“We know that something complex like that probably takes about 100-plus working days on the current timetable. I can’t imagine that something like that is going to take less.
“What they are going to have needed to do is get a whole load of corporate finance-type reports of effectively valuation reports.
“That would look at comparative transactions that have been done in the women’s game and all this sort of stuff and try and come up with a fair value for that transaction.

“It could be done in fairly short order, but not given the timescales that the Premier League has set out in the decision.
“I don’t know why these things are taking so long, but they clearly are and possibly a lot of it is also just waiting for information to be provided by the applicant club in fairness to the Premier League.
“They are taking a long time, so I don’t think that would have been approved yet.”
