Stefan Borson: Man City ready to agree Phil Foden deal

Manchester City star Phil Foden appears to have recaptured his form in recent weeks at the Etihad Stadium.

Concerns had emerged Foden could be the next Jack Grealish in terms of being frozen out of Pep Guardiola’s plans after he endured a slow start to the new season.

However, the England international has registered two goals and two assists in his last five appearances as he looks to get his Man City career back on track.

Man City have been told to extend Foden’s contract ahead of his deal expiring in June 2027 at the Etihad.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Guardiola’s side will want to avoid Foden entering into the final year of his contract.

Phil Foden could stay at Man City for 10 years

TBR Football reported on 24 September Man City are set to hold new contract talks with Foden.

The 25-year-old played the full 90 minutes in Man City’s 5-1 victory over Burnley on Saturday (27 September).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I don’t think people like to go into the last year of the contract.

“And of course, he’s also refinding his form from two years ago, which makes a big difference. I think it makes sense for them to try and agree something now to lock him in for probably the rest of his career.

“You would think the plan would be that he would do 10 years.”

Foden’s form dipped last season, having recorded 13 goals and seven assists in 49 appearances.

The midfielder contributed 27 goals and 13 assists in 53 outings in the 2023-24 campaign.

Phil Foden interested in spending rest of his career at Man City

Fellow academy product Rico Lewis has recently agreed a new contract at the Etihad, with Man City now looking to tie down Foden’s long-term future.

Borson said: “He’s 25, 26 next May, so you would think five years would take him through to 30.

“That would probably be the plan I would think, making him one of those kinds of statue-type players given his association with the club and that he’s a fan, you would think that he’d be interested in that.

“I guess you don’t know really whether he’s got the desire to go to Spain, for example, but it makes sense either way to get him signed up now. You don’t want to go into that last year.”

Man City have picked up 10 points from their opening six games of the new Premier League season, with Foden starting three of those matches.
