Stefan Borson: Pep Guardiola could make ‘mic-drop exit’ after Man City bombshell

Pep Guardiola has been quizzed about his long-term future at Manchester City over the past couple of years.

Man City beat Liverpool 3-0 last time out, firing them up to second in the Premier League table and four points behind Arsenal.

However, that hasn’t prevented speculation emerging around Guardiola’s future again.

The Times reported on 11 November people with knowledge of the situation have admitted an exit at the culmination of the Catalan manager’s 10th season, which is next summer, could be on the cards.

Guardiola agreed a contract extension at Man City in November 2024, with his deal expiring in June 2027.

Pep Guardiola exit rumours come from Man City sources

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Guardiola could make a “mic-drop exit” next summer if his side are successful this season.

The 54-year-old joined the Manchester giants in 2016 and has since gone on to claim 18 trophies at the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the reports around Guardiola’s future, Borson said: “It’s very hard to know. The journalist that wrote the piece doesn’t just make it up. I mean, clearly somebody said something to him.

“I think that like any of these sorts of managers that have been there for a very long time, he’s had something like double the number of games that he had at Barcelona as manager, he’s had three times the amount of games that he had at Bayern Munich, so the majority of his managerial career has been at City.

“I think he’d want to leave on a high. I mean, if City were to have a good season, I could envisage a mic-drop exit. That wouldn’t massively surprise me.”

Roberto De Zerbi in contention to replace Guardiola

In terms of potential replacements, Football Insider revealed on 14 November Roberto De Zerbi is being considered by Man City’s hierarchy alongside several other managers.

Since taking over at Marseille after his dismissal from Brighton in 2024, the Italian has turned his side into one capable of challenging for the Ligue 1 title.

Marseille currently sit second in the table, just two points behind league leaders PSG.
