Stefan Borson reveals Pep Guardiola’s England manager talks after Man City exit latest

Pep Guardiola’s long-term future at Manchester City remains unclear as rumours have recirculated around a potential exit.

Man City were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United on Saturday (22 November), seeing them drop to third in the Premier League table and seven points behind leaders Arsenal.

There have been suggestions Guardiola could leave Man City at the end of this season, which is his 10th in charge at the Etihad Stadium.

Guardiola agreed a contract extension at Man City in November 2024, with his deal expiring in June 2027.

However, it is believed the Manchester giants’ hierarchy will not stand in the Catalan’s way if he decides to leave.

Pep Guardiola has considered quitting Man City

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Guardiola previously held talks about taking the England job before agreeing his latest extension.

The 54-year-old could once again be considering his future after a mixed start to the campaign at the Etihad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Guardiola’s future, Borson said: “It’s impossible to tell. I don’t think Pep’s really known whether he was going to stay until the last minute each time. I think it’s been in the balance each time for him.

“He’s had discussions with the England team. I think David Ornstein wrote about that, so we know that he’s considered other roles and considered leaving various times.

“I don’t think anybody would have ever foreseen him staying 10 years. Nobody would have foreseen him doing more than half his managerial career at City.”

Who could replace Guardiola at Man City?

In terms of potential replacements, Football Insider revealed on 14 November Roberto De Zerbi is being considered by Man City’s hierarchy alongside several other managers.

Since taking over at Marseille after his dismissal from Brighton in 2024, the Italian has turned his side into one capable of challenging for the Ligue 1 title.

Marseille currently sit second in the table, just two points behind league leaders PSG.

Vincent Kompany is also believed to be on Man City’s list, having previously spent 11 years at the Etihad as a player.

However, the Belgian recently extended his contract with the Bundesliga champions until 2029.
