Stefan Borson suggests how much compensation West Ham paid out to Graham Potter after sacking

Graham Potter is back on the job market following his departure from West Ham last month.

Potter was sacked by West Ham on 27 September after his side claimed just one win from their opening six games in all competitions.

West Ham appointed Potter as Julen Lopetegui’s replacement in January following a poor run under the Spanish boss.

However, Potter has failed to turn things around at the London Stadium during his nine months in charge.

West Ham have since hired Nuno Espirito Santo, with the Portuguese manager picking up one point from his opening two games against Everton and Arsenal

West Ham hit by £5m blow after Graham Potter sack

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Potter is likely to have been paid around £5million in compensation following his exit.

The 50-year-old won just six of his 25 games in charge during his time in east London.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Potter’s compensation package, Borson said: “It’s probably about £5m.

“He’s done very well historically from compensation at Chelsea in particular, and Chelsea also had to pay a fortune to Brighton on that one, tens of millions of pounds.

“But I think he probably ended up with about £5m because it’s so early on in the contract. He was probably in quite a good negotiating position when he joined.”

West Ham fans were critical of Potter before his sacking following the club’s poor start to the season.

Graham Potter could face new issue after West Ham axe

Potter could now face a difficult task securing another Premier League job after struggling at West Ham and previously at Chelsea

Borson said: “The flip side is it’s compensation for a real loss. He is going to find it very difficult to find a job of that nature again I think after the couple of failures.

“That money is going to probably have to stretch for quite a while, and he’s probably going to have to take a step down as well for his next role, probably into the Championship maybe, and hope that he can rebuild his managerial career.

“It’s compensation, but with a genuine compensatory element to it.”

West Ham currently sit 19th in the Premier League table after picking up just four points from their opening seven games of the campaign.
