Stefan Borson suggests how much Man United really paid Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester United could have been paying Sir Alex Ferguson up to £3million a year since he stepped down as manager in 2013.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that figure is between 20 to 30 times what Sir Bobby Charlton was earning from his ambassadorial role at Old Trafford.

Ferguson stepped down as Man United manager in 2013 after winning 38 trophies during his 26-year spell in charge.

The Scotsman has been retained as a global club ambassador and club director since his exit from the Old Trafford dugout 11 years ago.

But The Athletic reported on 15 October United’s part-owner INEOS has ended the 82-year-old’s ambassadorial contract, which it claims was worth £2.16million a year.

Man United haven’t denied Sir Alex Ferguson claim

But Borson revealed Ferguson’s annual fee could have been worth slightly more than the reported figure.

He told Football Insider: “The only thing we know about it from the cost of it is from the press and you would have thought United would have responded if the press was widely wrong on the £2million a year.

“We know that £2million comes from the 2013 accounts, where it was outlined that that’s what the agreement was.

“As it happens, that agreement that ran from mid-October in 2013 through to the end of the season was £2.16million.

“Bottom line is, there is a good chance that actually on an annualised basis that agreement was £3million and not £2million.

“But if he really has been paid £2-3million for 10 years since leaving the job, that is a very substantial amount of money for a former manager.

“Just to put it into context, that same 2013 accounts was explaining that Bobby Charlton, who had a role as a director on the football board, which is what Ferguson had, was being paid £105,000 per annum, so Ferguson was being paid between 20 to 30 times what Bobby Charlton was.

“That is what the press are writing, whether that’s been briefed by the club or not, I don’t know.”
