Stefan Borson suggests real reason Man City could sell stars amid ‘£350m’ reveal

Manchester City’s potential summer sales are not about reducing their wage bill and will be more around maintaining financial discipline.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League champions’ wage bill has tended to stay around the £350million over the past few seasons if you take away the 2022-23 treble-winning campaign.

There have been several first-team players linked with a move away from the Etihad this summer despite the club claiming the league title for a fourth year in a row last season.

Ederson and Kevin De Bruyne are believed to be on the radar of clubs in Saudi Arabia, while doubts have also been raised about the futures of Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish and Julian Alvarez.

Man City potential sales not a bid to bring down wage bill

Borson doesn’t believe any potential sales will be in a bid to trim the wage bill after Pep Guardiola hasn’t shied away from moving on first-team players in recent years.

He told Football Insider: “If you take out last season’s treble-winning season, the wage bill has tended to be around the £350million level in total over the last four years.

“I don’t think City’s sales are around reducing the wage bill.

“I think the underlying wage bill will stay at around that £350-360million level before exceptional bonuses.

“But I don’t think the sales are about reducing the wage bill.

“I just think it’s about financial discipline as much as anything.”
