Stefan Borson suggests why Man United could be waiting to sack Ruben Amorim

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has been linked with a move to Manchester United as speculation continues around Ruben Amorim’s position at Old Trafford.

Football Insider revealed on 19 September Man United view Glasner as an option to replace Amorim should they decide to pull the trigger on his position.

Amorim was drafted in to replace Erik ten Hag last November, but he has largely struggled to turn things around at Old Trafford.

However, Man United’s 2-0 win against Sunderland eased some of the pressure ahead of the upcoming international break, with the goals coming from Mason Mount and Benjamin Sesko.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Man United could be looking to avoid paying compensation to sack Amorim and appoint a new manager.

Man United could face £20m blow to appoint new manager

Borson previously told Football Insider Man United could have to pay Amorim £10m if they were to sack him following his difficult spell at Old Trafford.

Alongside Glasner, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has also been linked with the Manchester giants in recent weeks.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “Apparently, Ratcliffe has said he doesn’t want to do anything until the end of the season, and that might be because partly they don’t think that there’s a great set of managers available.

“Or the flip side of having to pay a manager out is something else that they’ve done over the years, which is a very high recruitment cost for the manager coming in, especially where you’re taking him out of another club.

“Increasingly, those deals are sort of £10m compensation deals and it may be that it’s not just that the Amorim compensation they’re going to avoid, but they simply can’t right now be seen to be paying £10m to Bournemouth for their manager or Crystal Palace for Glasner, whoever the manager is, it’s going to cost them £10m.”

Man United currently sit 10th in the Premier League table after picking up 10 points from their opening seven games of the season.

Man United could appoint Oliver Glasner for free

Man United could appoint Glasner or Iraola for free next summer, with both of their deals expiring in June 2026.

Borson said: “It’s slightly different in the summer, I think some of those managers are out of contract, and it may be that they can get a better deal there, so I think all of that’s going to go in the mix, but I can’t see that the compensation situation is going to be the key driver on Amorim.”

Glasner has enjoyed a strong spell in charge at Palace, having led his side into the Conference League after their FA Cup final victory last season.

Meanwhile, the Eagles currently sit sixth in the Premier League table following their solid start to the new campaign.
