Stefan Borson: This is how Liam Rosenior’s six-and-a-half-year Chelsea deal will be structured

Liam Rosenior has become the latest manager to take on the Chelsea job following Enzo Maresca’s departure.

It was confirmed earlier this month Maresca had left Chelsea after his position was deemed untenable following disagreements behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior has been appointed as the new Chelsea manager, having spent the past year-and-a-half working at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

The 41-year-old has signed a six-and-a-half-year deal until 2032 as he hopes to achieve long-term success with the Blues.

Rosenior has become the London giants’ fifth permanent manager under BlueCo, the ownership group spearheaded by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, since May 2022.

Liam Rosenior’s compensation clauses revealed in Chelsea contract

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Rosenior’s contract will include compensation clauses in the event he leaves Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have paid out more than £40million in compensation to former managers during the BlueCo era.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “We know from the Maresca situation that the Chelsea managers in their contracts are obligated to tell Chelsea’s ownership if they’re approached by other clubs.

“Maresca told Chelsea’s ownership that City had been in touch in October, I think partly because he was negotiating, but he was honest enough to tell the club that City had been in touch.

“There’s probably a clause in Rosenior’s contract there that specifies the compensation level for a club that wants to take him out of his contract before the end of the term. It’s probably £10m. Maybe it’s £10m for a normal club and £15m for a Champions League club or something like that, so that’s the way it’ll work.”

Why Chelsea have agreed six-and-a-half-year Rosenior deal

Borson insisted Rosenior’s six-and-a-half-year deal at Chelsea will include clauses that provide clarity on how much he will earn at certain points.

“The headline number is largely for the club’s benefit because the club basically fixes the salary and the progress of that salary,” said Borson.

“It may be stepped up over each individual season or has clauses dealing with bonuses. But it sort of sets out what the situation is for the next six years, so they don’t have to keep revisiting it.

“It probably does mean that they can amortise any of the cost of the acquisition of the manager over six years, but I don’t think it should be seen as, ‘Well, we’ll definitely keep him for six years now’. It’s just not that.”

Rosenior is looking to help Chelsea rise up the Premier League table after they have slipped to eighth following their poor form in recent weeks.
