Stefan Borson: Why Tottenham will have a summer ‘war chest’ despite European blow
Tottenham are going to have a “war chest” to strengthen their squad in the summer transfer window.
That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Champions League is putting them in a “really strong” position financially.
Tottenham were beaten 4-1 by rivals Arsenal on Sunday (22 February), leaving Igor Tudor’s side looking over their shoulder.
Spurs are now just four points above third-bottom West Ham in the Premier League table, having failed to win any of their past nine top-flight matches.
However, the north London giants are into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Why Tottenham could be making transfer ‘promises’ to star players
Tottenham’s hierarchy has been heavily criticised by the club’s supporters for their lack of spending in recent years.
While there is an expectation Spurs will spend more money this summer, their immediate priority is securing their Premier League status.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed the knock-on effects of the club’s disappointing campaign.
“I think there’s still a good chance that they get quite far in the Champions League, just because the way the draw has fallen,” said Borson.
“But the truth must be that they’re not going to be in a European competition next season, so that’s going to have an impact. I think it’s going to have an impact in terms of the players hanging around. They’re going to need promises. Look, it is possible that those promises are going to be made.

“They’re certainly going to have financially this season a fantastic year because they’ve managed to keep the wage bill under control. They’ve not spent hugely on football players. They’ve sort of tweaked the squad. They’ve got some compensation that they’ve ended up having to pay out to Frank. They’ve had the Champions League.”
Why Tottenham must increase transfer spending in summer window
Borson insisted Tottenham will have to strengthen if they have aspirations of competing higher up the Premier League table.
“Overall this season, I think financially it’s going to be really strong for them,” said Borson.
“It’s going to give them a bit of a war chest when it comes to squad cost ratios for next season and for the Uefa tests to the extent that they’re relevant next season. Of course, if they’re not in Europe, then they don’t need to worry about that.

“But I think the bottom line is, they’re going to have to spend some money this summer to keep the squad happy.”
Tottenham’s next fixture sees them take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday (1 March), where they will be hoping to move away from the relegation zone.
