Stefan de Vrij: Aston Villa have ‘laid out their intent’ after source’s £40m reveal – expert

Noel Whelan has claimed “dominant” Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij would be a “welcome addition” for Aston Villa this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Villa Park side “won’t mess about” in completing a deal for the 30-year-old.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider (26 March) that Holland international De Vrij is on Aston Villa’s radar as they plot more top-class signings to follow the January capture of Philippe Coutinho.

The Serie A winner’s current deal expires in June 2023 and he was valued around the £40million mark in January – although that figure is likely to reduce this summer.

Whelan claimed Aston Villa must focus on strengthening their defence rather than their “incredible” attacking options.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Straight away they laid out their intent this season, didn’t they?

“Last summer they signed players quickly, early – and they did the same thing in January. They had everything in place, and they’re running it in a very efficient way.

“I’m sure this season won’t be any different. If they identify a player who they think will really boost their chances of European qualification – they won’t mess about getting him in.

“If you look at their squad, their depth in the forward line and midfield is quite incredible. However, defensively, that is where they need to shore up.

“They’re looking for another centre-half. Someone who is dominant, very much like De Vrij, would be a welcome addition.”

Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings have been the first-choice pairing for Aston Villa this term.

The Midlands side sit ninth in the Premier League – some 12 points adrift of European qualification.
