‘A step up’ – Cummings aims dig at Scottish football after Nottingham Forest switch
By Danny Wright
New Nottingham Forest recruit Jason Cummings has aimed a dig at the standard of football in Scotland by saying a move to the Championship is “a step up”.
The 21-year-old found the second tier of football north of the border all too easy last season, as he helped fire Hibernian to the Scottish Championship title with 19 goals in 31 league games.
Even though Cummings was on the verge of playing football in the top-flight, he insists that a move to England to play for Forest presents him with a bigger challenge.
“It is a bit of a step up. It is different to Scotland and obviously the standard of the players is a bit better. It feels like they are a lot bigger and fitter and the way they play is faster and quicker. It takes time to adapt but I feel like I am getting there,” he said to Forest’s official club website.
The debate between the quality of football in England and Scotland is a common subject, especially after Celtic reigned supreme last season by winning the domestic treble without suffering a single defeat.
Hibernian were preparing to take on the mighty Hoops next season, as well as Rangers and bitter local rivals Hearts, but instead of gearing up with the Edinburgh club, Cummings clearly decided that the time was right to switch south of the border to take part in Mark Warbuton’s revolution at the City Ground.
The Scottish striker is likely to make his first league appearance for the Reds when they welcome newly-promoted Millwall to the banks of the River Trent on August 5.
In other Nottingham Forest news, the club is pursuing this Borussia Dortmund academy graduate, but face competition from one of the UK’s biggest teams.
