Stephen Kelly expected to join new club amid ‘big’ claim – Rangers TV pundit

Steven Kelly will go out on loan again this summer as he approaches a “big moment” in his Rangers career, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, claimed the 22-year-old has to show Giovanni van Bronckhorst that he is capable of playing first-team football.

As quoted by the Daily Record (11 June), Kelly claimed he has had “no indication” about his Rangers future but admitted he has a “massive 12 months” ahead with his contract in its final year.

The Scotland Under-21 star spent the second half of the 2021-22 campaign on loan at League Two side Salford City, making 21 appearances.

Kelly has played just three times for Rangers to date and is yet to turn out for the Ibrox side in the Scottish Premiership.

Hutton insisted the midfielder must go out on loan in order to stand a chance of jumping to the top of the Gers’ pecking order.

“He has to go and play football,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’s at a crossroads right now in his Rangers career because he did burst onto the scene. He did do well when he was given the opportunity to play first-team football.

“But he’s quite low down in the pecking order. That’s not to say he can’t get to the top – but he has to be playing games.

“He’s at an age now, the contract is running down – he has to go and show the manager that you’re capable of playing games.
