Steve Hitchen: Tottenham expert baffled as fans ‘rewrite’ history

John Wenham has slammed the “rewriting history” and “revisionism” he has seen from some Tottenham fans following Steve Hitchen’s departure.

Spurs insider Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On Wednesday (2 February), Tottenham announced Hitchen had left his position as technical performance director.

Wenham is glad Hitchen is gone and suggested this exit had been planned ever since Fabio Paratici arrived in the summer of 2021.

“There is a fair bit of revisionism going on about Steve Hitchen at the moment,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I was asking for him to go six or 12 months after the 2019 summer transfer window, which he takes sole ownership of.

“The man in charge of transfers at the time was Hitchen. I find it bizarre that some people are rewriting history and claiming he didn’t want to sign those players.

“He did sign those players and everyone else around him at the time has gone apart from the chairman.

“I imagine Hitchen did think Paratici was standing on his toes a little bit.

“But I do wonder if this was planned, there is usually some sort of continuity when a new guy comes into a role that someone else has been overseeing for a period of time.

“Maybe Hitchen was always going to leave after the January transfer window ended.

“I wouldn’t be surprised by that at all. Personally, I’m fine with him moving on.

“That transfer window was so poor and I don’t think we have recovered, especially coming from where we were.

“He did make some good signings but on the whole, I think his premiership has been a disappointment.”
