Steve McClaren told to ‘keep his mouth shut’ by pundit after Man United reveal

Frank McAvennie has told Man United assistant manager Steve McClaren to “keep his mouth shut”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker said McClaren needs to let United “do the talking on the pitch”.

The Red Devils lost their first home game of the season on Sunday (7 August).

Erik ten Hag’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

Speaking pre-match, as quoted by the Mirror (2 August), McClaren said the players have forgotten about the past, and revealed he has a “good feeling” about United this season.

He added that the club have some “damn-good players” who “want to win”.

McAvennie claimed it is too early for McClaren to be making such claims.

McClaren has to keep his mouth shut,” he told Football Insider.

He is coming out saying Man United are going to do something special this year, I’m thinking really? They’ve not really bought anyone.

I tell players to do their talking on the pitch, I would say that to the coaches as well. We’ve not even really started the season and McClaren’s coming out and saying he sees “special” players. They’ve been there for years and they’ve not been good enough, they don’t become great players overnight.
