Steven Bergwijn has ‘changed the mind of Conte’ after critical Tottenham development

Noel Whelan has claimed he would be “very surprised” to see Steven Bergwijn leave for Man United after his Tottenham fightback.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Antonio Conte would block a potential exit for the 24-year-old.

According to the Daily Mail (14 April), incoming manager Erik ten Hag is considering a move for Bergwijn when he takes charge of Man United.

The report claims a deal for the winger, who was linked with a move away in January, would likely cost in the region of £20million.

Bergwijn has made only one league start under Conte but has managed three goals from the bench since the start of 2022 to keep his place in the Italian’s plans.

Whelan insisted it would be a “very strange decision” to swap Tottenham for the Old Trafford club.

“I don’t think Tottenham will want to sell him right now with how he’s playing,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“And if I’m Bergwijn, where would I rather be?

“For me, Tottenham are firm favourites for that fourth spot and for Champions League football.

“I think he’s changing the mind of Conte with his performances, and for that Holland side as well.

“I’d be very surprised if he does go to Man United, and if Tottenham allow him to go. He’s one of these players who has fought back, much like Matt Doherty, to keep himself at the club under Conte.

“If he does go to Man United, it would be a very strange decision.”

Man United

Tottenham sit fourth with seven games remaining, six points and three places above Man United.

Bergwijn is under contract until 2025 in north London.
