Steven Davis replacement may already be at Ibrox after ‘very exciting’ Rangers news – McLeish

Alex McLeish has suggested Aaron Ramsey could end up taking Steven Davis’ place after joining Rangers on loan.

However, the former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the thought of the experienced duo linking up in midfield is a “very, very exciting prospect”.

Rangers announced the loan signing of Ramsey from Juventus on Monday evening (31 January).

McLeish suggested the 31-year-old could slot into a similar role as Davis at Ibrox.

However, he insisted the pair could also form a masterful midfield partnership.

“You could imagine Ramsey starting to come into a Steven Davis-type role,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“But I would be looking for more than that from him. He runs off the ball, he’s box-to-box so he can do that job and more. That’s my analysis of him and how I’ve judged him over the years.

“If players can see his runs, he could be on the end of scoring a few goals but also assisting many of the goals.

“Steven Davis is a legend and an absolute master in the position he plays. Ramsey, I’m saying he’s world-class so I believe he can be the next Davis and a wee bit more.

“That’s not to say him and Davis can’t play together. I don’t think you’d ever get the ball back. It’s a very, very exciting prospect.”

Rangers

Ramsey only played five times for Juventus this season before leaving for Ibrox on loan.

The 71-cap international has made a total of 70 appearances for the Italian giants in two-and-a-half years at the club.
