Steven Gerrard ‘teaching Morgan Sanson a lesson’ after what journalist spotted at Aston Villa – pundit

Morgan Sanson will struggle to break back into the Aston Villa starting XI, according to Paul Robinson.

The ex-Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 27-year-old’s performances have been “poor” this season.

Sanson has not played a single minute for Steven Gerrard’s side since reacting angrily to being substituted in a 2-2 draw with Man United last month.

According to Birmingham Live’s Patrick Rowe (14 February), the centre-midfielder looked “a dejected figure” at Newcastle United on Sunday.

The £16million signing watched on from the bench as Villa were beaten 1-0 by the Magpies at St. James’ Park.

When asked by Football Insider assistant editor Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Sanson’s lack of game time, Robinson said:

“Gerrard might be teaching him a lesson after the way he left the pitch against Man United. There was a reason why he was substituted against United. His performance was not at the level expected.

“I suspect his lack of game time is more to do with performance than the way in which he reacted but it could be a factor. I think poor performance rather than attitude is to blame.

“It will be tough for him to break back into that starting XI because Villa have some good players in midfield.”

Sanson has made seven appearances across all competitions this season.

His contract with the Claret and Blues expires in the summer of 2025.
