‘Not got the same energy’ – Stuart Pearce blasts trio of Tottenham stars

By Russell Edge

Former Newcastle United and England defender Stuart Pearce has hit out at some of Tottenham’s stars after their start to the Premier League season.

The Lilywhites have had mixed success so far, with impressive wins over Huddersfield, West Ham and Everton marred by a disappointing defeat to Chelsea and home draws to Burnley and Swansea.

As a result they find themselves in third place in the league table, ahead of the likes of Antonio Conte’s side but already five points behind league leaders Manchester City and Manchester United.

With the first international break of the season having arrived, former Manchester City boss Pearce has been rating the clubs’ performances so far and despite giving Spurs a ‘B’, he took a swipe at the quality of a trio of their stars.

Writing on the Sky Sports website, he said: “They’re going to miss Danny Rose and Kyle Walker.

“While Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies are more than adequate, they’ve not got the same energy as the other two.

“Dele Alli is just going through a tough period.”

“I don’t think Dele is great at manipulating the ball in tight spaces; he likes to have a bit more room.

“Teams are giving Spurs more respect, banking up and making it tight.”

Both Trippier and Alli have been called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for their final World Cup qualifiers over the international break, where they will meet up with former club team mate Walker.

The Three Lions will be playing Slovenia and Lithuania knowing a win would secure their place at the World Cup finals in Russia next summer.

Davies meanwhile will be linking up with former Tottenham star Gareth Bale over the next fortnight having been called up to the Welsh squad.

In other Tottenham news, Kyle Walker has made a surprise admission following his departure from the club.
