Summer signing must seal temporary exit of Rangers 20-year-old for good of his career

COMMENT

Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie enjoyed an impressive season on loan with minnows Berwick last season – and after the Gers re-signed Allan McGregor the 20-year-old needs to seek a loan move away from Ibrox to continue his development.

McCrorie is tipped to be a future Rangers number one but with McGregor, Wes Foderingham, Jak Alnwick and Liam Kelly all ahead of him in the pecking order currently then there isn’t much chance of first-team football for the Scotland Under-21 international in the near-future.

Although it is likely that one of the senior goalkeepers – maybe even two – could leave Ibrox this summer, it would take an incredible set of circumstances for McCrorie to join his twin brother Ross in the starting XI under Steven Gerrard next season.

With McGregor in the final years of his career, McCrorie could well be in pole position to be the Gers first-pick keeper when McGregor decides to hang his gloves up but before that happens he needs to get out and play as many games as possible.

The much-discussed Colt team proposal isn’t going to happen before next season at least so getting away from Ibrox on loan looks like being McCrorie’s best option to get games and the return of a reserve league isn’t really something that is going to be as beneficial as playing competitive senior football.

After impressing at Berwick, a move further up the leagues would be ideal for the Gers with a Championship or even bottom-half Premiership team being the perfect destination for McCrorie.

The 20-year-old seems destined to head for the first-team at some point in the future but for now, the Gers and the player need to figure out what is best in the short-term for him.
