Kieran Maguire rubbishes £75m Sunderland claim – ‘this won’t solve anything’

Simply removing parachute payments will not eliminate inequities between the likes of Sunderland the country’s biggest clubs.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest comments from EFL chairman Rick Parry.

In conversation with the Daily Mail on Monday (17 October), Parry claimed that cutting prize money in the Premier League would reduce the need for parachute payments.

He argues that this would help destroy “cliff edge” between the two divisions, with the Premier League’s bottom-place team in Parry’s system earning £75m as opposed to the current £100m.

But Maguire believes that this in itself would create greater imbalances higher up the league system.

“Rick Parry’s comments bout reducing the size of the gap between the Premier League and the Championship certainly have some merit,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

However, for that to really hold water, it’s got to be dealt with on a far more comprehensive basis than the gap between the Premier League and the Championship.

There is also a significant gap between the Championship and League One, and also between the Big Six clubs and those not competing in Europe.

We can’t just solve one problem in isolation. It has to be dealt with in a holistic way.

If that happens, everyone who wants a competitive league would agree with the conclusions made. But just targeting one aspect isn’t going to solve anything.
