Sunderland could accept Dennis Cirkin offer in January after Tottenham reveal

Sunderland have enjoyed a strong start to the Premier League season following their promotion from the Championship last time out.

Sunderland beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 to rise as high as fifth in the table, with three wins, two draws and one defeat in their opening six games.

The Black Cats also enjoyed a busy transfer window as they spent over £160million on a major overhaul of Regis Le Bris‘ first-team squad.

However, their action in the summer could now force Dennis Cirkin out of the club after the double signing of Reinildo and Arthur Masuaku.

Cirkin has spent the start of the season on the sidelines after picking up a wrist injury towards the end of last season and underwent surgery on the issue.

Sunderland could cash in on Dennis Cirkin in January

Football Insider revealed on 14 September that Cirkin could be forced to leave Sunderland on a free transfer, with his contract due to expire in 2026.

His extended spell on the sidelines has pushed him down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light, and as a reuslt, they could now look to cash in during the January window.

That is according to former Sunderland chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected at his former club, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Black Cats could aim to raise funds from his sale rather than let him leave for free next year.

“I think Cirkin is a good player,” Brown said.

“I remember watching him once when Tottenham’s Under-21s played Everton Under-21s at Southport and he caught my eye in that game.

“Next thing I knew, he’d gone to Sunderland and was starting to make a name for himself, and he was a key player for them last season.

“But since they’ve come up to the Premier League, they’ve brought in a couple of different options and it seems he’s been pushed down the pecking order.

His injury has come at a really unfortunate time, during that transitional stage, and perhaps now there isn’t really space for him to come back in.

“If the right offer comes in January, I expect Sunderland will be prepared to let him go because the way they’re playing right now, it’ll be hard for him to get back into the side.

“I think he’s a good enough player to get a good move in January if Sunderland decide that’s the best course of action, because they’ll want to raise some money from him.

“If his recovery goes to plan, I don’t doubt there will be interest rather than having to wait on the sidelines until the end of the year when he’d move on a free.”

With interest from Tottenham ahead of the January transfer window, it is growing more likely that the left-back will be tempted to consider his options away from Sunderland.

Tottenham keeping tabs on Cirkin situation

Football Insider revealed on 14 September that Tottenham are interested in signing Cirkin as they put plans in place for the 2026 transfer window.

The 23-year-old came through the academy at Tottenham before leaving for Sunderland in 2021, and sources say he would be open to a return to North London.

Spurs’ current left-back options are Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence, with the latter having started the season in top form, and Cirkin would provide further depth.

The interest in Cirkin comes amid Tottenham’s concerns about the number of homegrown club-trained players who have to be registered for the Champions League.

A “club-trained player” is someone who has been on a club’s books for three entire seasons or 36 months between the ages of 15 and 21, with four needed on each team.
