Sunderland news: Pundit issues ‘honest’ Jack Clarke claim as struggle continues
Jack Clarke “should be head and shoulders above” other players at Sunderland, according to Paul Robinson.
The former Tottenham and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 21-year-old is underperforming on Wearside given his talent.
On January 26, Clarke joined the Black Cats on loan for the remainder of the season.
However, the winger has struggled to nail down a starting spot at the Stadium of Light despite injuries to key players such as Aiden McGeady and Nathan Broadhead.
Clarke was a late substitute in Sunderland’s goalless draw at Charlton Athletic on Saturday.
When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Clarke’s loan spell, Robinson said: “He should be ripping it up in League One.
“If you sign from Tottenham on loan you should be head and shoulders above everybody else.
“He has gone from the Championship to the Premier League, back down to the Championship and now down to League One. He should be looking very good at that level, let’s be honest.
“There is time on his hands but he needs to start producing consistently if he wants to make it at the top level.”
Clarke has failed to contribute a goal or an assist in his two starts and six substitute appearances for Alex Neil’s side to date.
The winger, who has enjoyed loan spells at Leeds United, Stoke City and QPR, is under contract with Spurs until the summer of 2023.
