Finance guru: This is how Sunderland can rocket past £1.6m after new deal announced
The likes of Sunderland could boost their commercial income if the EFL sold more sponsorship rights as a collective.
That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Football League’s latest sponsorship deal.
The EFL announced last Thursday (10 March) that they had embarked on a new partnership with builders’ merchant Jewson.

Sunderland trousered £1.6million from sponsorship and royalties in their latest set of accounts.
Plumley claims that the Black Cats could see that figure swell if the EFL negotiated more sponsorship deals as a collective like the Jewson tie-in.
“There’s potential for the EFL to make more money,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.
“This is a good move. But look at perimeter advertising, for example. You could sell that as a collective so that all clubs get a share of it, like this deal.
“That will benefit clubs across the league, although some clubs would argue against it. It’s about self-interest versus collective action.
“Some clubs would argue that they could fill that sponsorship gap with a deal that is worth more than a collective deal.
“But overall, if you do this well, there is the opportunity for everyone to make more money.”

Sunderland, who are unbeaten in their last five matches, are in action against Lincoln City tomorrow (19 March).
Alex Neil’s side are 6th in League One with eight matches left to play.
