‘Sunderland to trigger £150m signing spree after Simon Adingra medical update’

Sunderland could be set to trigger a £150million signing spree after a Simon Adingra medical update has emerged.

The Black Cats beat Sheffield United 2-1 in the Championship play-off final in May to secure their return to the Premier League.

Football Insider revealed on 29 May Sunderland’s hierarchy would make “big” funds available for a summer overhaul following their promotion.

Stadium of Light chiefs are fully aware they need to spend money during the ongoing transfer window if they want to remain in the top flight.

The promoted sides have been relegated in each of the past two campaigns, leaving Sunderland, Leeds United and Burnley facing an uphill battle to stay up.

However, Regis Le Bris’s side are certainly taking the window seriously after multiple new additions have arrived at the Stadium of Light.

The Premier League newcomers have secured the permanent signings of Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki and Chemsdine Talbi, with those deals setting the club back around £80million.

Meanwhile, Reinildo Mandava has also joined on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid.

Sunderland close in on Simon Adingra deal

Sunderland have shown no signs their spending is over this summer as several more deals could be on the cards.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie reported on Wednesday (9 July) the Black Cats have agreed a deal with Brighton to sign Adingra.

He said Sunderland will pay £18million plus £2.5million in add-ons for the 23-year-old winger, who has flown to the North East by private jet to undergo a medical.

The Ivory Coast international registered five goals and two assists in 33 appearances for Brighton last season.

Sunderland could quite easily spend up to £150million if they make more new signings over the coming weeks, with the Adingra deal taking their transfer expenditure so far to around £100million.

Sunderland set sights on Sam Johnstone deal

Former Stadium of Light chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Sunderland have set their sights on signing Sam Johnstone this summer.

The 32-year-old is understood to be a target for both the Black Cats and Leeds as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping options.

Johnstone is ready to leave Wolves after seeing his opportunities limited at Molineux, having kept just one clean sheet in his 10 appearances last season.
