Sverre Nypan: ‘Arsenal in pole position to beat Man City to late deal’

Arsenal are in pole position to beat Man City to the signing of Sverre Nypan in a late-window deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Arsenal have been pushing to sign the 18-year-old “for a while” and are currently leading the race.

Nypan is said to be leaning towards a move to the Emirates, where he would slot straight into Mikel Arteta’s plans upon his arrival.

City, meanwhile, would prefer to send the midfielder to their sister club Girona so that he can gain experience in a top European league before joining Pep Guardiola’s side.

Well-placed sources have told Football Insider that Arsenal have been speaking to the midfielder to convince him to make the move before the 3 February deadline.

However, there is a growing feeling that he will remain at Rosenborg for the rest of the season, with a move to the Premier League more likely to happen in the summer.

Nypan’s current contract is set to expire in December 2026, and he will have just 18 months remaining on his deal in the summer, and his club are likely to cash in rather than risk his value dropping.

Rosenborg’s league season finished on 1 December in a 4-0 win against Kristansund, where the midfielder scored his eighth goal of the season.

He also provided ten assists over his 33 appearances across all competitions, and has established himself as one of the most highly-regarded young midfielders in Europe.

Interest from the likes of Arsenal and Man City is a testament to his quality, and there is a belief at the Emirates that he could quickly establish himself as a key first-team player.
