Swindon Town open talks to sign Bournemouth’s Gavin Kilkenny – sources

Swindon Town have opened talks over a deal to sign Bournemouth midfielder Gavin Kilkenny, sources have told Football Insider.

The 24-year-old is well down the pecking order at the Vitality Stadium and the Cherries are now willing to let him move on in search of regular first-team football.

Swindon are hoping to beat off a number of EFL clubs in the race to sign the midfielder on loan for the coming season and have moved quickly to discuss terms.

The League Two outfit are looking to strengthen in midfield after losing George McEachran, who joined Grimsby Town on a free transfer earlier this summer.

Kilkenny’s availability has put their transfer team on alert and they are now pushing to get a deal over the line before the 30 August deadline.

Kilkenny moved to Bournemouth at the age of 16 and was handed his first professional deal with the club in 2018 – although he has featured just 25 times in the six years since.

He has been sent on three separate loans in the last three seasons and failed to make any real impact.

Short-term deals with both Stoke City and Charlton Athletic saw his stock tumble after appearing just 12 times across both spells.

His latest move saw him spend the second half of last season on loan in League One with Fleetwood Town, making 16 appearances, although he failed to rescue them from relegation.

The Fishermen finished in 22nd, just three points below the first survival place, with Kilkenny’s impact not enough to keep them up.

Now, Bournemouth are keen to see him move on once again – with clubs across the EFL eyeing possible loan moves.

His experience in League One is viewed as valuable experience by Swindon, who are keen for him to strengthen their side.

After finishing 19th last time out, they are looking to steer clear of a relegation battle this season and have turned to Kilkenny to help their cause.
