Takumi Minamino: Expert ‘sure’ on Liverpool agreeing £17m fee as Southampton move mooted

Noel Whelan has backed Liverpool to recieve their reported £17million asking price for out-of-favour forward Takumi Minamino this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Southampton and Brentford would be “great” potential destinations for the 27-year-old.

According to journalist David Lynch via Anfield Watch (19 May), Liverpool have slapped a price tag of £17million on Minamino as they prepare to listen to offers – with Inter Milan reportedly interested.

The Japan international, who is out of contract in June 2024, has netted 10 goals in nine starts for the Merseysiders this season.

Minamino scored twice during a six-month loan at Southampton last term, and Whelan backed the Saints to return for the forward during the off-season.

When asked if his price tag is fair, he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge: “Absolutely.

“Minamino for £17million? It’s a no-brainer.

“He’s got a good attitude, he seems the type of player who will put in a shift on the training ground.

“He had a great spell down at Southampton, showed great perseverance to get into their side.

I’m sure they’ll be sniffing around to see if they can do a deal to bring him back this summer.

“The likes of Brentford, as well. He could be a great replacement for Christian Eriksen if he decides to move on.

“It’s a great price for someone who has a good record in front of goal.

“If there’s one thing Jurgen Klopp is with his players – it’s fair. That asking price is more than fair.”

Liverpool signed Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg for a reported £7.25million in 2019.

The versatile forward has gone on to net 14 goals in 55 games for the Anfield side.
