Talks underway: Arsenal open to stunning swap deal for 20-goal PL striker – report

By Matt Farr

Arsenal have begun negotiations with Manchester City over a stunning potential deal to sign Sergio Aguero, according to a report.

The Daily Star claim that the Gunners are investigating the possibility of bringing the 29-year-old goalscorer to the Emirates this summer, in a deal that could see Alexis Sanchez move the other way.

Aguero has led the line for Manchester City for a number of seasons, and scored 20 Premier League goals last year, but he faces an uncertain future at the club under manager Pep Guardiola.

The Etihad chief has shown a preference towards winter signing Gabriel Jesus as his first-choice centre-forward, which prior to the Brazilian’s injury, saw Aguero’s first-team opportunities limited.

But the Argentine international could find himself fall even further down the pecking order at the club next season if Guardiola succeeds in his attempts to land Arsenal attacker Sanchez.

The 28-year-old scored an incredible 30 goals and supplied 19 assists from 51 appearances in all competitions last season, but has only one year left to run on his current contract, and talks over a new deal have yet to begin.

City are among a number of Europe’s elite clubs to have been alerted to Sanchez’s contract situation, and Guardiola has made him his number one target.

It is understood that discussions have already taken place between the two clubs about a deal that would see the South American international stars swap roles this summer.

Football Insider verdict

A swap deal involving two top-class goalscorers may sound like an easy resolution, but it is not an ideal outcome to talks. Arsenal must still view a new contract for Sanchez as a top priority, and if they were to let him leave the club, a Premier League rival must be considered off limits. Aguero is a fine striker, and would be fantastic alternative, but if it means Sanchez going to the Etihad, it must be avoided. The Chile star is without doubt one of the best players Arsenal have had at the club for a number of years, and he must be treated like such. The lack of silverware is a major concern for them, but allowing him to leave without a fight is not an option.

In other Arsenal transfer news, talks are reportedly set to begin with this 23-year-old over a new £100,000-per-week deal.
