TalkSport pundit: This Arsenal ace is looking iffy ahead of Bayern Munich clash
By Amir Mir
TalkSport pundit Charlie Nicholas has stated that Arsenal ace Petr Cech is beginning to look “iffy” ahead of their clash against Bayern Munich.
Arsene Wenger confirmed prior to the Champions League clash that the number one keeper will be replaced by David Ospina.
Backup keeper Ospina has been a regular feature for the Gunners between the sticks in the Champions League this term and he will be looking to continue his good form at the Allianz Arena.
Ahead of the match, former Arsenal striker Nicholas delivered his verdict on Cech as he backed Wenger for dropping the senior man.
“I was as thrilled as anybody when Arsenal signed Petr Cech. He was a top-class goalkeeper,” Nicholas told TalkSport. “For me, he’s starting to look a little bit iffy, he’s not quite as agile as what I have seen before.
“He doesn’t really come for the crosses when Arsenal are not good at defending crosses. So I don’t really have an issue with that [bringing in Ospina]. I think that’s just the way it’s always been planned.
“If Ospina plays really well tonight I would be tempted to think that Wenger might say well maybe it is time to give him a run.”
Cech has been a regular feature for the north London club in the Premier League during this campaign, making 25 appearances and keeping eight clean sheets.
He was at fault when the Gunners were beaten 3-1 at their London rivals, Chelsea a few weeks ago when his kick fell straight to Cesc Fabregas who netted the third goal for the home team.
Now, Cech is set to be replaced by Ospina, who last featured for his side during their 5-0 win at Southampton in the FA Cup at the back end of January.
Other than that, he is yet to make a league appearance, but he did play a pivotal role in Wenger’s side finishing top of their group during the Champions League group stages.
The Columbian international produced a man-of-the-match display when they drew 1-1 at PSG in September.
In other Arsenal news, Arsene Wenger believes this 24-year-old is bringing stability to the side.
