Ten Celtic stars ‘need to go’ in January – ‘Enough is enough’, says expert

10 Celtic stars “need to” leave Parkhead in January as they are not good enough for the squad.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie cited both James McCarthy and Mikey Johnston as two first-teamers who must depart.

While Brendan Rodgers’ side have held their spot at the top of the league, many fans are growing concerned with the quality of their squad.

Their summer recruitment has proved substandard, with Marco Tilio, Maik Nawrocki and Odin Thiago Holm accruing just five league starts between them.

Other squad players who earn more minutes, including James Forrest and Greg Taylor, have often struggled to meet the lofty expectations of the Glasgow giants.

McAvennie has urged for a major clear-out of players who can’t make an impact on the first team through loans or permanent sales.

“There’s a lot of players they need to get rid of,” he told Football Insider.

“For me, there’s about 10 players that have to go this window.

“James McCarthy – he’s on a five-year contract on big money and he’s not playing so just put him out on loan and away from the club.

“He’s never going to get near the first team.

“He’s getting really good money and his agent has done a really good job for him, but you want to see him go and play football.

“Mikey Johnston, for me, has got to go.

“There are better players coming through who should get a chance – you can’t keep giving Mickey chances.

“He’s been there for years now, but enough is enough.

“He’s never stamped his authority or got first-team spot.

“But for me, there are plenty who need to go.”
