‘That’s mad’ – Pundit can’t believe Newcastle bid to sign Leeds United star Crysencio Summerville

Newcastle United need to be “aiming higher” than a move for Leeds United ace Crysencio Summerville in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed a move for the 22-year-old would do little for the Magpies’ long-term attempts to challenge for the Premier League title.

The Dutchman has been a standout in the second division following Leeds’ relegation last season and is reportedly on the Magpies’ radar for a move this January.

He has notched 12 goals and 6 assists in the Championship this season, including in the Whites’ recent 3-0 victory over Birmingham City on New Year’s Day.

However, McAvennie feels Eddie Howe’s side must target signings who will walk straight into the starting XI, not “another squad player”.

“That’s mad, I think Newcastle should be aiming higher than that,” he told Football Insider.

“They’re bigger than that now. They’ve fallen away in their recent games.

“They need more quality. Summerville has scored 12 goals and six assists this season.

“But I think with the money that they’ve got, they need to be looking for bigger players than Championship players.

“Would bringing him in help Newcastle challenge Man City and Liverpool? I don’t think so.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

“They need world-class quality. They have a threadbare squad and the people that are coming in aren’t good enough.

“Newcastle don’t need another squad player, they need someone to come straight into the starting line-up.”
