Jason Cummings delivers verdict on Rangers semi-final draw v Celtic
Rangers striker Jason Cummings insists the Gers will look to put a serious dent in Celtic’s treble hopes with wins in next week’s potentially season-defining Old Firm clash and next month’s Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden.
The bitter rivals were paired in yesterday’s draw to set up a third Old Firm in the last three months of the season and give Graeme Murty’s side a chance to avenge their Hampden defeat at the same stage 12 months ago.
Cummings scored three of the Gers’ four goals in the quarter-final win over Falkirk and is confident the Gers are putting pressure on Brendan Rodgers’ side.
“We’re going to go and try to beat them, that’s what we’ll set out to do and push them as far as we can,” Cummings said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“Of course, we don’t want to see Celtic winning trebles and winning all the time. We’re trying to put a bit more pressure on them and I feel like we are.
“We can just take it week by week and win every game we can and we’ll see what happens. The boys are buzzing, these are the games you want.
“We’re going to have to beat them (Celtic) to win the cup, so why not just make it the semi-final. The boys are confident just now and we can’t wait to play that.”
The 22-year-old will have given Murty a headache after firing a hat-trick from left wing after coming in to replace the injured Jamie Murphy.
With Murphy possibly set to return for Sunday’s Ibrox it could give Murty a difficult choice over which of the pair to start with.
The former Hibs striker took his goals tally since arriving at Ibrox in January to six strikes in 10 games for the Gers.
Football Insider verdict
It is clear to anyone that the Gers are playing with confidence and must surely go into Sunday’s Old Firm clash with the best chance of beating their bitter rivals as they’ve had since the club’s meltdown in 2012. A win for Murty’s side would blow the title race wide open and maybe just be the spark which leads to Brendan Rodgers’ side collapsing. The Light Blues are scoring with ease at the moment while Celtic’s defence look shaky infront of Dorus de Vries. With Cummings putting in easily his best display yet since joining the Ibrox giants, everything seems to be clicking into place at the perfect time for Murty’s side.
In other Rangers news, this Premier League playmaker wanted a future at Ibrox in 2011 and this summer is his chance to realise that dream.
