The biggest boots to fill: Newcastle’s five greatest strikers since Shearer

3. Andy Carroll

Appearances: 90 – Goals: 33

The only homegrown name on the list, Andy Carroll was another chosen to take on Shearer’s number nine shirt, following in the footsteps of his club hero.

The giant striker was a rarity on Tyneside – a graduate of the youth system – and fans took to him immediately as he demonstrated what a threat he could be up front.

Used sparingly as a substitute when he was a youngster, he came to the fore during the ill-fated 2008/09 season, scoring three goals in 14 outings as the club slipped to relegation.

He established himself as the first choice hitman during the campaign in the Championship, 17 goals and 12 assists helping the club back to the top flight, where he continued his sensational rise to stardom.

His 11 strikes in 19 appearances resulted in him being the centre of a £35million transfer swoop from Liverpool – ending any hopes of him being the long-term replacement for Shearer.
