The biggest boots to fill: Newcastle’s five greatest strikers since Shearer

2. Papiss Cisse

Appearances: 131 – Goals: 44

Another striker who took on the number nine shirt, Cisse made an explosive start to his career on Tyneside after joining from SC Freiburg.

Two goals in his first four appearances were followed by an astounding run of 11 goals in eight matches, firing the club to a brilliant fifth placed finish – their highest for some time.

He might never have hit those heights again while with the Magpies but he still managed to net 44 times across all competitions, marking his place in both the club’s and the Premier League’s history books with his goal against Chelsea – a quite unbelievable strike which has to be seen to be believed.
