Darren Bent claims Tottenham forward Erik Lamela silenced some of his critics with his performance against Manchester United on Friday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Spurs and England striker was bowled over by the 28-year-old’s display against the Red Devils.

As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month, Lamela’s future in north London is up in the air this summer and the club will listen to offers if he cannot convince Jose Mourinho of his value over the next nine matches.

He started Friday night’s 0-0 draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and played 70 minutes before being replaced by Gedson Fernandes.

Steven Bergwijn gave Spurs the lead but a Bruno Fernandes penalty meant that the points were shared in the clubs’ first game back since lockdown.

Bent singled out Lamela as a star player for Mourinho and believes his performance will have gone a long way in proving his value at Tottenham.

Asked if the Argentine ace had silenced some of his critics, Bent told Football Insider: “In terms of standout performer, I thought Lamela was brilliant, I thought he played really, really well.

“Listen, he played really, really well – he got on the ball, was tenacious in the tackle, tried to make things happen, drove with the ball. At times his decision making wasn’t the best but he really impressed me.

“He probably has got a point to prove because as long as he’s at Spurs, I can’t ever see him being one of his main men where you go they’ve got to play him, he’s got to be the first name on the sheet.

“If he keeps putting in performances like he did on Friday, I think that will help and endear himself to the fans more. If he can put in those kind of performances again, he’s someone you can rely on.”

Lamela has played 28 times, scored four goals and contributed six assists for Tottenham this season, although only 18 of those appearances have come in the Premier League.

He has two years left on his contract in north London, having put pen to paper back in 2018.

In other Tottenham news, Bent has ripped into a senior Spurs star who was completely “off the pace” on Friday night.
